IH8MUD.com PRODUCT REVIEW:

    Drill Doctor model DD750

One toy I've always felt would be a nice addition to the shop collection was a drill bit sharpening tool...I'd gotten pretty good at doing them by hand, but knew that they could be sharper and last longer if I broke down and purchased one. When Drill Doctor approached me, it was the perfect opportunity to put it to the test.

The DD750 is their top model...since I use bits up to (and above) 3/4", having one with all the available sizes was necessary. This model comes with the replaceable diamond cutter, a nice hard case, and two different bit adapters for various sizes.

Like any good male, I decided to grab an old 1/4" bit, toss it in, and see what happens. Directions, as all men know, are only to be read once all else fails....well, read them! That first bit ended up completely flat...just my luck. As I viewed my screwup, I realized I just might have to break down and read them....well, a few minutes later, and I not only learned how to properly setup the bit for proper sharpening, but also had my bit starting to look like it would cut more than warm butter. Once you get the feel for it, the unit works great.

The "feel" is a rocking motion as you sharpen...the bit holder is shaped such that the bit mores in and out slightly, and it rocks too. This gets the leading and trailing edges of the bit set properly, as well as the tip. With very little practice, you learn the motion and can get a bit touched-up really quickly.

The results...check out those nice curls!
